The digital change is fundamentally changing how society deals with information. Not only does the internet offer users unprecedented access to information of all kinds, it also enables them to publicly evaluate and disseminate existing information, as well as to become sources of information themselves in real time using the simplest of means. The empowering consequences of this emancipation from traditional “information gatekeepers” are particularly evident in contexts where existing power asymmetries make it difficult to uncover and denounce abuses. At the same time, however, digital media also stand for the spread of fake news, propaganda, and conspiracy theories, as well as for new forms of digital violence.Does digital change therefore harbour the potential for individual disempowerment or disenfranchisement in the handling of information? Does it promote social networking and solidarity, or does it create polarisation and hostility?
